Loops and Hoops mixes hula hooping and the body’s carefree circularity into the busy center choreography. Hula hooping is a dynamic game that spreads positive energy and, for many, creates associations with the carefree and non-binding time-wasting of childhood.
The hula hoops also represent the symbol of the circular, of the cycle, the female energy, which the artist subtly spreads with her infectious, circular movements. As a playful contrast to the masculine and to the contemporary linear perception of time, Cuenca Rasmussen’s performance becomes a symbolic attempt to move against the streamlining of the performance society. At the same time, she insists on defying the number 13 and letting the 13 hula-hooping performers become a showdown with the superstition, that is deeply connected to both religious precepts and rule-bound systems.
